Away from the beaches, soccer games and paml trees, there is a unique sound coming from the streets of Riode Janeiro's favelas. Produced bythe new socially conscious label Verge Records. The Inspiring New Soundss of Rio de Janeiro is a compilation of mixinggenres such as hip hop, samba, dub, jazz and traditional carioca music. Instead of promoting the usual themes of gangsta rap-violence, the drug war and weapon traffic-issues very much alive and well in the cities slums, artists such as Sumuca of Movimento na Rua, who spent 10 years in jail, devotes his lyrics to uplifting the favela's youth. And these jams won't just shock your body-label founder Emmanuel Zunz vows to put 10 percent of Verge's profits toward Schools Without Borders, a non-profit musiuc education program for underserved communities. No doubt, your spirit will be moved as well. -JB 09/06/07
