Born in the northwest Punjab state of Bihar and raised there in India and in Canada, singer Kiran Ahluwalia uses her enchanting new album to fuse fado, an intensely melancholic Portuguese style, with ghazals, a 600-year-old form of sung Indian and Pakistani poems and rhymes that are often erotic in nature.

Classically trained, she has a lovely voice and the ability to create new melodies for the Ghazal verses she sets to music. Aided by 14 musicians from from at least half a dozen countries, she also incorporates elements of jazz and blues, by way of Africa, but never sounds clumsy or self-conscious. The lilting synthesis that results is as lovely as it is understated.
