Capital, Concert Preview (excerpt) >>
Tonight, head into Baltimore to hear Indian-born Canadian singer Kiran Ahluwalia perform some truly unique and exotic music at The Patterson Theatre (8 p.m.).
Kiran Ahluwalia - my second Pick of the Week - performs Indian and Pakistani poetry about unrequited love combined with fado, a Portuguese song form also made up of poetry in song. The resulting style is an international hybrid that also reveals strains of jazz, blues and African colors. Kiran Ahluwalia is a musical wanderer who was born in India, raised in Canada, and now lives in New York City. Her new release, "Wanderlust," brings the ghazal (Indian folk music) style into a modern and global context.
