Time Out New York, Concert Review >>
Queens Theatre in the Park applauds the inclusion of four Spanish-language productions in the Lincoln Center Festival ["Spanish fly" by Kerri Alien, TONY 613]. However, we disagree with Olga Garay's comment that in New York, "there was no major venue for really intelligent, well-crafted performing arts [in Spanish]." This year, Queens Theatre in the Park's annual summer JP Morgan Chase Latino Cultural Festival includes 17 events encompassing film, concerts, theater and dance, and reveals the deep roots and groundbreaking future of the Latino arts in NYC. Historically, the Theatre has commissioned works by international artists from Central and South America. I agree that more high-quality Spanish-language performing-arts productions should be undertaken in NYC, which is why we have made that a top priority, along with presenting intelligent, well-crafted performing arts in the vibrant gateway borough: Queens!
