Pasadena Weekly, CD Review >>
Globally renowned South African jazz trumpeter Masekela looks backs over his lengthy career with this two-disc set, which celebrates musical highlights (a punchy reprise of 1968's "Grazing in the Grass") along with African icons and movements ("Mandela," a funky rendition of Fela Kuti's "Lady," the sprightly "Up Town ship"). Masekela's personal brand of tasteful jazz-pop-African fusion may not be to everyone's liking, but the players are tightly focused and excellent recording clarity helps recapture what was obviously an intense performance. In concert Aug. 2 at the Skirball Center in LA. www.timessquarerecords.com
