Daily Breeze, CD Review >>
If you missed world music icon Masekela at the Skitball last Thursday, this two-disc live set from South Africa’s Market Theatre might ease the sting a bit. As career summations go, it doesn’t get much better, and Masekela’s flugelhorn has never been more expressive. The voice has picked up some gravel along the way, but the 65-year-old Masekela still has plenty of fire. Check out his defiant rebuke when audience members chuckle as he introduces “Stimela,” his workingman anthem, “It’s not a joke!” Masekela retorts. That conviction fuels every note played here.
