Oliver
Mtukudzi, known familiarly as "Tuku," is already world-famous for his irresistibly infectious brand of socially conscious Zimbabwean pop. Now a revered elder statesman, he has graced several films, including Under African Skies and The Soul Of The Mbira, both from the BBC, as well as Jit, featuring an all-Zimbabwean cast, and Neria, which addressed the dire plight of women in male-dominated cultures. He has also composed soundtracks for documentaries about Africa's ongoing struggle against AIDS. The present album's title acknowledges that everyone's footprint is different while asking what lingering traces of our lifetimes we are likely to leave behind us. Have we hurt, ignored or helped other people, protected or sullied our surroundings? Did we talk too much and accomplish too little? These difficult questions are posed amid catchy yet unassuming vocals and artfully understated accompaniment. Ranging between the call-and-response choirs, bubbling guitars and the rippling mbira-like triple rhythms typical of his homeland's venerable folkloric sources, and coolly contemporary jazzy sounds and sax lines harking back to the heyday of South African jive, Tuku, as he always has, moves the heart as well as the feet. His legions of devoted fans will be delighted to add this gently philosophical, richly melodic set to their collections. 09/12/07 >> go there
