OLIVER MTUKUDZI & BLACK SPIRITS (Zimbabwe)
Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi is one of the most powerful creative forces to emerge from Zimbabwe in the last three decades. His irresistible brand of afro-pop, lovingly referred to as “Tuku music,” is a contagious mix that draws from effervescent South African mbaqanga beats and energetic Zimbabwean jit pop, along with the hypnotic mbira (thumb piano) rhythms of Zimbabwe's politically charged chimurenga music. For this special Boston appearance, Tuku and his band, the Black Spirits, return to their roots with a more traditional sound that brings the lilting, multilayered sound of the mbira to the forefront.
