Guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Oliver "Tuku" Mtukidzi just released his new album "Tsimba Itsoka" ("No foot, no footprint") on Heads Up International, "Nhava." The Zimbabwean superstar has been performing for 30 years.  He merges traditional Shona music with sounds from other parts of Africa as well as Caribbean and American blues and folk, fusing them into an immediately accessible mix.

The lyrics, which are summarized in the helpful liner notes, deal with social issues (such as crime or the breakdown of communication.)  "Kumirira Nekumirira" ("Waiting and waiting") is a plea for people to take control of their lives.  Even when the message is serious, the music is light and jazzy.  His arrangements are rather complex; he uses a ten-piece band and often carries on a dialogue with his female backup singers (an African version of the Rae-lets).  Mtukudzi and The Black Spirits will perform at S.O.B.'s (204 Varick Street; 212-307-7171) on October 17 at 8 and 10:30 p.m. 10/11/07
