Traps, CD Review >>

For those who comprehend the language in which Mtukudzi pens his lyrics, Tsimba Itsoka poses a puzzle right from the opening track, "Ungade We?"  To a gently festive Zimbabwean/South African rhythm, singing as always in a major-key mode, He asks, "How would you like it if your daughter was raped?"  Setting these unsettling messages aside, we're left with extremely listenable performances, played at subdued volume and medium tempos, but with a rhythmic undercurrent bubbling constantly in pan-African or proto-reggae formats.  The heart of this groove pulses the paring of Never Mpofu, whose spare bass lines make the silence between phrases simmer and steam, and drummer Clive Bobby Mutyasira.  Adam Chisvo contributes some lovely percussion; just a few taps here and there, plus a marimba cascade in the background, enhance the feel on "Nhinduro" like a waterfall spray on a summer day.  This one, by the way, is about guilty characters telling lies to cover their tracks, which only proves that ignorance of meaning can lead to bliss.
