Reno Gazette-Journal, CD Review >>

The style of chicha is named after a popular Andean corn drink, and a lot of chicha music these days is thought to be somewhat corny in its formulaic slavishness. But this disc reveals the heights of hipness the style achieved in its beginnings back in the 1960s and 70s, when Peruvian bands playing their own kind of Colombian cumbias added the elements of American surf rock and British psychedelia. Guitars swim in reverb and wah-wah effects as they work through organs, synthesizers and thumping rhythm sections. The riffs might have been played on pan pipes or accordions generations earlier. The 17 tracks run a gamut from sinuous Ethiopian-style groove to the licks you might have heard in a Route 66 roadhouse to a bouncy take on Beethoven.
