This album features an array of Peruvian bands that flourished during the late ‘60s in various Amazonian oil boom towns. They combined cheesy garage rock and psychedelic surf sounds with indigenous Peruvian rhythms and Colombian cumbia styles to create “chicha,” a genre that was shunned by South American hipsters and academics, but embraced by rural blue collar workers and native peoples. It’s weird, it rocks and you can dance to it.
