BACHATA ROJA/various:  Who’d have known that so much of the 70’s guitar music from the tropics that we characterize as vacation music got it’s start in Dominican whorehouses?  No wonder we like it.  This collection of boleros that were subverted into the bachata sound still sounds like a load of great vacation music, the kind you hear on the beach in the tropics by wandering minstrels hoping for tips.  If you ever had one of those vacations, this set is sure to give you a great blow back, particularly if you live anywhere winter is moving in.  Because so many of the players were as whacked out as the songs they were singing, this transplanted rural sound never quite broke through due to lack of consistency which makes this nugget even more of a find in that it survived at all.  It really is a cool blowback to that open air beach bar with the bootleg satellite tv hook up showing dubbed Chuck Norris movies…good times!  Subtitled ‘acoustic bachata from the cabaret era’, put it on and pretend you were there. 11/08/07 >> go there
