Music: Bachata Roja: Acoustic Bachata From the Cabaret Era

Our Take:

Iaso Records is quickly becoming one of the best sources for classic Bachata music from the Dominican Republic.  We first heard the style with Puerto Plata’s release on the label a little while back, and now they have unleashed Bachata Roja, a collection of 14 songs comprised of noteworthy bachata artists from various eras (ranging from the 60’s up to the 90’s).  Offering plenty of enjoyable songs, this album is a fine representation of Dominican music that is finally seeing the light of day in other countries.

Bachata music is dominated by the acoustic guitar, and as such many of the compositions are minimal in sound when compared to other Spanish language music that listeners may have heard.  All of the songs are enjoyable whether you know Spanish or not, and this is the type of music that one can tell the performers truly enjoyed playing.  Iaso has done an excellent job on compiling this collection, and each artist is given a biography in both English and Spanish in the booklet.  This music hasn’t gotten a lot of exposure in the past, but listeners who enjoy South American music will love this release.

As previously mentioned, anyone with an interest in general South American music or bachata, this release is a must have.  Unlike many albums, this one features many local favorites and is meant to truly appeal to the average person.  This style of music is not one that everyone will find themselves interested in, but for the person seeking to become further cultured or just looking for something new, give this one a shot.  It’s a slice of little known history from the Dominican Republic that is worth experiencing.
