DOMINICAN ROOTS MUSIC: "Bachata Roja" Various Artists (Iaso/Ryko)

Along with merengue, bachata is the Dominican Republic's contribution to the Latin music scene. But before the slick pop bachata of today, the music was acoustic and had its roots in poor rural areas. When economic immigrants moved to the capital, their country music was disparagingly called "bachata," named for fiesty parties.

This retro collection follows the early years of bachata, which was pretty much ignored by the media until the 1980s. The grooves are easygoing, though the audio quality shows all too well that the musicians were not in state-of-the-art studios.

Listeners willing to get past the rustic recording sound will discover the charms and laid-back swing of this long-overlooked genre.
