The unearthly voices of the Bulgarian Women's Choir introduced world music fans to the female choral traditions of Eastern Europe. The San Frnacisco-based Kitka explores similar territory, working with Ukrainian composer Mariana Sadovska on a folkloric song cycle derived from rituals to appease the Rusalki, siren-like female spirits who haunt the woods and streams of Slavic Europe. The music's primeval rhythms will remind classical music devotees of Stravinsky, who mined similar fields for inspiration. The angular, jarring harmonies cast a hypnotic spell.
