Kitka is a nine-women strong, San Francisco Bay Area vocal ensemble that draws on the power and mysticism of the spirits in this album. Kitka has brought a fresh contemporary perspective to the sumptuous harmonies, striking dissonances, angular rhythms, and resonant strength of traditional Eastern European women's vocal music. Kitka teamed with Ukraine's Mariana Sadovska to create an original score and breathe new life into the folk tradition that was fast becoming extinct. "Awakening" is a collage of Ukrainian ritual songs, plus "River Rose", trailed by "Wave" depicting a character possessed by a Rusalka spirit, along with "Farewell," "Transformation," "Last Night," "Sirens," "Lamentation" and "To The Lake." Mesmerizing songs of the siren-like beauties that inhabit the stream, and lakes, the forest and fields. These powerful songs have helped to continue the ritual song tradition practiced from the Balkans to Siberia. Extremely interesting sounds with an extremely interesting story behind it! 01/25/08 >> go there
