Aphrodesia, Jujuba, DJ Santo

Among the American musical descendants of the late, legendary Nigerian musical icon Fela Kuti, Aphrodesia has long supplied the West Coast version of his big-band Afrobeat. Aphrodesia’s music is spiced with contemporary lefty political exhortations and irresistibly danceable rhythms accented by Afro-Cuban influences and Ghanaian highlife influences. Singer Lara Maykovich studied at the source, in Ghana and then Cuba. Last year, the whole band went to Lagos to drink from the wellsprings of Nigerian Afrobeat, and their sizzling new album and tour reflect the recharge.
