Herald Times, CD Review >>
This ain’t your average Afrobeat. Led by two female vocalists and a horn section, Bay Area-band Aphrodesia got new inspiration for its latest album, “Lagos by Bus,” from its recent trip to Africa. Songs were inspired by amusing handpainted signs, pursuit of Nigerian soldiers, and even the band’s bus driver. On the CD, the group “uses Afrobeat as a backbone but also draws on Afro-Cuban music, Ghanaian Highlife and jazz ... named after this harrowing experience,” a press release from the local world music hub Rock Paper Scissors says. It continues, “The album takes listeners for a ride of chance meetings and pan-global inventiveness with both political edge and danceable immediacy.” Other experiences behind the music include one member’s stint in Ghana and another’s visit to Cuba. Hear for yourself at 9 p.m. Wednesday at Uncle Fester’s for $5. 07/28/08 >> go there
