The history of 20th-century black music is practically etched into the palms of drummer Steve Reid's steady hands. He grew up on Thelonious Monk's block and jammed with innovators like Jimi, Fela, Ornette, and Miles. While not a member of that club of one-name wonders, Reid still keeps the kind of company that guarantees solid, stylish (though not necessarily innovative) beats. On Daxaar, Reid's latest in a series of collaborations with producer Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet), the duo relocated to Dakar and recorded with mostly local musicians. The result is a mélange of not-too-sappy grooves recalling both Santana and On the Corner-era Miles, minus some of the latter's ferocity. With its languid kora solo and vocals, album opener "Welcome" hints at the enveloping rhythms to come. This is the sound of an old hand making some "regular groovy, happy music," as Reid says, and it's as good a reason as any to remember to respect your elders.
