If there’s anyone in the music industry who has worked with the best, it’s Steve Reid. He’s been journeying through soundscapes with the likes of Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Miles Davis and plenty of other head-turning artists. Daxaar blends afro-pop with jazz in a fusion of satisfying mellow-out music and upbeat African sounds. Recorded entirely in Africa, this is the kind of album that fans of jazz dig through crates for and some claim is disappearing from music today. Brilliant vocals and a vibrant medley of instruments make this entire album worthy of anyone’s time. In classic jazz style, many of the tracks are too long for normal radio play, exceeding the cookie-cutter three-minute time limit, but each song is vast and explores a lot, so they’re never a boring listen.
