GLOBALFEST
(Sunday)

-by Ben Sisario

In a sense this marathon one-night showcase works against itself: Though most of its performers are usually classified as “world music,” their cosmopolitan variety exposes the uselessness of that category. The dozen acts on three stages include Vinicio Capossela, an eccentric and inspired Italian songwriter who sometimes dons a Minotaur mask for dramatic effect; Fallou Dieng, a rising star of Senegalese mbalax; José Manuel Cobles (a k a Puerto Plata), an octogenarian guitarist and singer from the Dominican Republic; Toumast, a guitar group from the deserts of Niger; Samarabalouf, a French Gypsy jazz band; Crooked Still, an acoustic “newgrass” band from Boston; Pistolera, an accordion-pumping, three-fourths-female Brooklyn group that takes an indie-rock approach to regional Mexican styles like ranchera; Little Cow, a rock band from Budapest; Lo Còr de la Plana, an a cappella group from Marseilles that sings in Occitan, the traditional language of the south of France; and Chango Spasiuk, an accordionist from Argentina. At 6 p.m., Webster Hall, 125 East 11th Street, East Village, (866) 448-7849, globalfest-ny.org; $40. (Sisario) 01/11/08 >> go there
