The Village Voice, Concert Preview >>
The group formerly known as the Chicago Classical Oriental Ensemble performs the music of Zakariyya Ahmad, Muhammad al-Qasabji, and Riyad al-Sunbati, who collectively composed most of the repertoire sung by Egypt's legendary Umm Kulthum. Seventy-five-year-old Syrian singer Youssef Kassab, who also transcribed the compositions from recordings, joins the Chicago sextet. Discover the sounds that brought Egypt to a standstill during Kulthum's weekly radio appearances.
