From the beginning of his career, Havana-born Alexis Puentes has struggled to go against the typical stereotype of what a Cuban artist is supposed to sound like, so upon hearing "Agua de Pozo" ("Water from a Well," Caracol Records), one notices that he draws influences from jazz, blues and also alternative rock without completely losing touch with his Caribbean roots. The arrangements chosen for the disc mostly go against the grain; instead of a large ensemble intended for the dance floor, what we hear are more intimate melodies with sparse instrumentation mostly provided by the singer himself, who plays guitar, bass and percussion (the only exception being the title track, a rumba co-written with his brother, Adonis Puentes) in a addition to singing. Alex Cuba might be one of the greatest surprises to emerge in the Latin-Alternative realm in 2008, and it is just a matter time until larger audiences discover him.
