The berimbau is a one-stringed instrument derived from West Africa which migrated to Brazil; it's best known for accompanying ceremonies of Candomblé, the Afro-Brazilian religion, and capoeira, the martial art. But Ramiro Musotto, who comes from Argentina and lives in Brazil, puts the berimbau to work in places where it might not have been before. In ' Civilizacao & Barbarye' (Circular), an album pieced together through live-band jams and a lot of computer tweaking, he uses the instrument as percussion, melody, background loops. The album starts with pumped-up versions of Afro-Brazilian grooves, but as it goes on it becomes a multiethnic dance music, with elements from Africa, South America, Asia and Europe.
