The Vancouver Sun, Le Trio Joubran: Inspired by poetry >>
Le Trio Joubran consists of three brothers from Palestine, the sons of a master luthier, all of whom play the oud. They are inspired by poetry, particularly the poetry of fellow Palestinian Mahmoud Darwish.
For Majaz, the brothers -- Samir, Wissam and Adnan -- are joined by percussionist Youssef Hbeish on a few of the 11 tracks, all but one composed by the Joubrans. Poetic is as good an adjective as any to describe this music, the rich sound of the oud -- a stringed instrument with a fuller body than a guitar -- permeating every bar. Laytana is rhythmic, almost playful, with a flamenco style. Roubbama is slower, utilizing call-and-response parts. The three-part Tanasim features each of the three brothers without the others, and each is different .
All tracks are instrumental except for the chant-like Min Zaman, a traditional about displacement from their home city of Nazareth, which the brothers sing mournfully.
Le Trio Joubran appears Saturday, 8 p.m., at St. James Community Hall.
