Nashville's The City Paper, CD Review >>

The Palestinian threesome Le Trio Joubran (who are brothers) are exceptional oud players, and they shatter all notion about what can be executed on that instrument, while smartly blending traditional Arabic music with elements of rock, jazz and flamenco.

The results can be chilling, especially on such songs as “Roubbama,” “Majaz” and three variations on the composition “Tanasim,” where fast solos are melded into remarkable unison segments. The group presents one memorable vocal number, “Min Zaman,” where the blend of sadness and tenderness is communicated even to Westerners that don’t speak the language. Now on an American tour that hopefully will make it to Music, Le Trio Joubran’s wonderful CD ably displays its distinct musical charms.
