The Toronto Star, While my oud gently weeps (Concert Preview) >>
Three Palestinian Christian brothers from Nazareth grew up absorbing their father's love for the oud, the Arabic guitar. The father made them by hand. The brothers learned to play – sometimes with tenderness, sometimes with driving virtuosity.
In 2004, they formed Le Trio Joubran, the first known all-oud instrumental trio, playing their own compositions in a stripped-down variation on classical Arabic style.
Their second album, Majaz, to be released next week, adds a percussion player to the orchestration and displays an overall maturing of this original and entertaining band.
Le Trio Joubran appears Saturday, 8 p.m., at Harbourfront's Enwave Theatre, 231 Queens Quay W. Tickets: $25 advance, $30 at the door. Box office: 416-973-4000.
