According to those who have listened to Le Vent du Nord, a Juno-award-winning quartet of Quebec musicians coming to Lake Superior State University this month, one does not necessarily have to be fluent in the French language to appreciate the band.

The music and energetic performances break down any language barriers.

The band, which performs only in its native French, will be on stage at 8 p.m. on March 15 in LSSU's Arts Center Auditorium.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for students.

Since its founding in August 2002, Le Vent du Nord has quickly become one of the most recognizable and esteemed bands in the world of Quebec traditional music.

Playing in more than 100 concerts per year, the band has performed across Canada, in 30 states on the U.S. side of the border, and throughout Europe.

Its members include singers and multi-instrumentalists Nicolas Boulerice, Simon Beaudry, Olivier Demers and Réjean Brunet, who perform their own compositions in addition to their traditional repertoire.

The band received a Juno Award for Traditional Album of the Year in 2004 for its CD Maudite Moisson! and received Traditional Album of the Year honours from the Canadian Folk Music Awards in 2005.

Also in 2005, the band was chosen as Artist of the Year at the North American Folk Alliance in Texas.

As described through its website, Le Vent du Nord offers an enlivening concert experience, characterized by its authenticity, sensibility and humor, and sprinkled with a touch of romanticism.

The spirit and roots of Québec traditional music permeate the concert, including frenzied podorhythms (foot tapping) fiddle and accordion, refined orchestrations colored by a savage-sounding hurdy-gurdy, superb four-voice harmonies, and traditional airs, ballads and call-and-answer songs.

The members were raised on their country's traditional music, with the exception of violinist and guitarist Demers, who started out playing chamber music before moving on to jazz and eventually devoting the past 10 years of his career to traditional music.
