Nashville's The City Paper, CD Review >>

Dans les airs (Borealis) is the third CD from the Quebec ensemble Le Vent du Nord, and it’s a whirling, often explosive and delightful blend of sounds otherwise known as traditional Quebecois music. There’s plenty of Celtic influence, plus bits of what Americans deem Cajun or folk, with everything done in French lyrics. They’re also outstanding musicians, particularly the flashy fiddler Oliver Demers and multi-instrumentalist Nicolas Boulerice.

Such numbers as “Rosette,” “Tour a bois,” “Le berger,” and “La fille et les dragons” are a mix of inspirational, appealing and endearing, and the foursome (other members included vocalist/guitarist Simon Beaudry and vocalist/accordionist Rejean Brunet) display the same sense of musical enjoyment that makes similar ensembles like The Chieftans so much fun to hear and see. Even if you know absolutely zero French, the songs on Dans les airs are captivating.
