The Financial Times, CD Review >>
Moussa Ag Kenya was a Touareg guerrilla, and for a while played with the celebrated Tinariwen. Ishumar, the first release from his band Toumast, occupies the same territory: gritty desert blues, guttural songs about displacement and identity and falcons. But where Tinariwen have the rhythm of a loping camel, Toumast are closer to a racing camel. They take some adventurous leaps, by the standards of desert blues: "Tallyatidagh" has soprano saxophone that sounds like a breathy flute; on "Dounia" the soundscape shifts in planes like a mirage.
