Nashville's The City Paper, Chicha's one of Cuba's hidden treasures >>

The Peruvian ensemble Chicha Libre’s CD !Sonido Amazonico! (Barbes) honors a movement that isn’t that documented even within the realm of Latin or Afro-Latin music, Chicha. It merged the propulsive beats and rhythms of funk with traditional Peruvian sounds, and bassist Nicholas Cudahy and percussionists Greg Burrows and Timothy Quigley are key figures in the rhythm section on “Sonido Amazonico,” “Mi Plato De Barro,” “Tres Pasajeros” and “Popcorn Andino” among others.

While the wave of percussive textures intersect, lead vocalist and cuatro player Oliver Conan and guitarist Vincent Douglas add other aspects, and special guests like backing vocalist Allyssa Lamb and second guitarist Sebastien Martel also help fortify the teeming backdrops and support.

Chicha truly has a different sensibility, something that really doesn’t have a current musical counterpart. It never really exploded even in Peru, and this band’s the first one that I’ve heard operating in this style. But it’s a very entertaining and unusual approach, one that shows again gifted players really can adapt any genre to fit their needs.
