Shepherd Express, CD Review >>
Recently an anthology was released in the United States of chicha, the mildy psychedelic music of the 1960's Peru. Perhaps it's no surprise that one of the world's leading contemporary chicha groups is working out of multicultural Brooklyn NY. Chicha Libre draws from old songs in the genre as well as original material, pulling the cocal and instrumental repertoire together into a playfully rhytmic yet often melodically melancholy sounds. Their teasing arrangements for organ and electric guitar suggest soundtracks to long-lost '60's movies set in exotic locales.
