The Bangkok Post has cleverly dubbed Les Yeux Noirs as “the boyband of a lost era.”  But don’t let that statement’s humor blind you to its truth: The French group’s music, steeped in Yiddish and Manouche (French Gypsy) traditions, often seems lifted directly from a distant time, a faraway place.  The decade-old group, formed around virtuoso violinist brothers Eric and Olivier Slabiak, also features violincello, accordion, electric guitar, cimbalom (a Hungarian Gypsy instrument) and electronic samples, the whole assortment blended into so much dervish-y, whirling, crazed-Jewish-wedding magic that you may get dizzy just listening.  Les Yeux Noirs – which translates as “the Dark Eyes,” after Django Reinhardt gypsy tune from the ‘30s – lights up UNCA’s Lipinsky Auditorium on Friday, Feb 13.  General admission tickets available at downtown Asheville’s Malaprop’s bookstore/Café. 02/11/04
