Boston Post-Gazette, CD Review >>

Juldeh Camara’s father Serif was a famous griot in Africa, and as he traveled the country with his blind father in a horse and cart, he learned the griot tradition. Joining Justin Adams who played guitar with Robert Plant for several years, they joined distorted guitars with African grooves, and gritty Spike fiddles to create Soul Science. Half of the tracks consist of rhythmic percussion loops, rooted in faithful African rhythms, layered with Camara’s improvisations, and Adams’ guitar on top of that. The result is eleven tracks of excitement found on cuts as the powerful “Yerro Mama,” the playful “Sanakubay,” the intrigue of “Blue Man Returns,” the pleading “Subuhanalaii (Have Mercy),” and the spirited “Ngamen (Let’s Dance).” The Soul Science experiment continues with “Nayo” a song that was popular in Camara’s homeland, and finishes off with “Yo Lay Lay” a song that deals with the slave experience, and the traumatic loss those left behind had to deal with. Just a sampling of this unique album!
