A few months after filling Victoria Park in early July, Sunfest kicks into its off-season with concerts bringing the soundsof Greece, Chile and Canadian-grown electronica and flamenco guitar to London.

Like its predecessors, Sunfest's World Music & Jazz Series 008-09 mixes world music stars from other countries with Canadians who embrace the style. Sunfest's flaf-ship even its its free, outdoor festival at Victoria Park in early July. The indoor concerts are ticketed. Three of the 2008-09 four concerts announced so far are at the Aeolian Hall, 795 Dudas St.

The series starts on Sept. 25 at Aeolian Hall with Greek singer Savina Yannatou and her Primaver en Salonico ensemble.

Yannatou told Roots-World.com the voice is "an instrument that resides inside our body. I mean you become an instrument yourself. That's a nice feeling. On the other hand, the technique of singing is the same, for me, as playing an instrument. In a similar way as a musician leads his fingers, somebody leads his voice. I guess that the same emotions related to what someone plays, what sort of piece."

Her influences include Canadian writer and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen, who has often visited Greece.

She notes Cohen "is not a singer but has that warmth in his voice and he speaks the words he sings about, and that is a very important element."

Vancouver's Delhi 2 Dublin, which mixes electronica, the music of North India and Irish fiddle, plays the hall on Oct. 23.

Also on the bill is Eccodek, a sample- and funk-minded outfit led by former Western and Fanshawe student Andrew McPherson. In the 1980's McPherson was a fixture on the London rock scene with many bands.

Since establishing a studio at Guelph in the 1990s, he has worked with a wide range of musicians, including such Canadian roots indie performers as Stephen Fearing and Lewis Melville.

On Nov. 15, Chile's Inti-Illimani returns to London under the Sunfest banner. The eight-piece ensemble blends the music of several South American countries. The Chileans were here in 2000 and 2004.

In the other concert announced so far, Toronto's flamenco-style guitarist Jesse Cook plays the Hilton London ballroom on Jan. 22, 2009.

Concert times for all four shows is 8 p.m.
