Boston Herald, CD Review >>

Young Canadian banjoist Stone should have called this album “Appalachia to Africa.” Because while it’s clear he became entranced with African music and Malian griot and kora virtuoso Sissoko during his sojurn on the continent, there’s not enough inspiration going in the opposite direction. Much of the disc sounds like Malian or Senegalese kora music with banjo and fiddle overlay. That said, the playing is sharp and when the exchange works - as on the the cut to download, the bluegrassy, Kentucky-meets-Mali number “Ninki Nanka” - it’s a gas.
