Jayme Stone received funding from Canada's Ontario Arts Council, and made good use of it. His musical mecca to Africa allowed him to immerse himself in the high-spirited sound-scapes, leading to his collaboration with Mansa Sissoko, a player of the 'kora'-- a 21-string African harp. Stone and Sissoko blur the lines of time and location, bringing the music of America and Africa closer. Songs of note have, "Bibi" (trans. Eagle), the fiddling "Ninki Nanka" (Mythical Snake), the song of thanks "Djula," the heavy beat of "Tunya" (Truth), and the path of life defined via "Sila." "Bamaneyake" sings praises, trailed by the finddle tune "June Apple," recycled Sengalese melodies inspired "Dakar," while the Malian dance song "From Tree To Tree" resonates, along with the lullaby "Tene." "Yelemane" reminds natives to cultivate their roots, "Chinquapin Hunting" has Africa meeting Appalachia on another fiddle tune, and "Kaira Ba" (peace big) puts the finishing touches on this groundbreaking album. Purchase at CDbaby.com. Stone & Sissoko will appear locally on October 8th at Club Passim, Cambridge and Berklee College Of Music Workshop. --Bob DeCristoforo 10/06/08
