Africa to Appalachia showcases the journey of banjo wizard Jayme Stone as he follows in the footsteps of Music City ace Bela Fleck, tracing the roots of his instrument. Like Fleck, Stone went to Africa, spending seven weeks there studying the banjo's history and also collaborating with numerous great musicians.

The amazing koro soloist and vocalist Mansa Sissoko teams with Stone on a session that explores the music of Mali and Senegal. While Sissoko's lines, complimentary phrases and separate statements are marvelous, the teamwork that he displays with Stone is arguably even more remarkable. They are at their best on "Bibi," "Djula" and "Tene."

Fiddler Casey Driessen, vocalist Katenen Dioubate, trumpeter David Travers Smith and Bassekou Kouyate on ngoni and ngoni ba alternate with the rhythm section of guitarist Grant Gordy, bassist Paul Matthew and percussionist Nick Fraser on these songs, which reflect both Jayme Stone's facility and his willingness and ability to fit into shifting, constantly changing situations.
