-by John Goddard

***
Toronto banjo player Jayme Stone went looking for the antecedents of his instrument early last year in the West African country of Mali. He found two specimens previously undocumented in banjo literature and--perhaps more important--developed a deep affection for Malian music. Afterward, he got together with Malian kora player Mansa Sissoko, now living in Quebec City, for this fresh, joyful album with a mix of North American and African instruments. Guests include American fiddle player Casey Driessen and hereditary Malian singer Katenen Dioubate, now of Toronto. TOP TRACK: "Bibi", a Sissoko composition showcasing the banjo/kora instrumental harmony.

Jayme Stone and Mansa Sissoko begin a 17-date North American tour on Saturday, 8:30 pm at Hugh's Room, 2261 Dundas St. W., 416-531-6604. 06/24/08 >> go there
