As with many symbols of American music, look beyond signifier to origins and you will find Africa. That's true of the banjo, as is pointed to in this collaboration between Canadian banjoist Jayme Stone and Malian (and recent Canadian resident) griot and kora player Mansa Sissoko. Together they've created a discreet and beautifully polished recording of music that floats effortlessly through a landscape simultaneously West African and North American. (Although ultimately it is Mali that rings through most clearly.) Strong vocals aside, it's the instrumental aspects of Africa to Appalachia that are key to its understated appeal - including graceful contributions from ngoni master Bassekou Kouyate, American fiddler Casey Driessen and trumpeter David Travers-Smith.
