There's nothing radically different about Frigg's third outing, but the multi-violin Finnish band swing harder than ever, and play with more sophistication on a widely varied musical trip that's merrily twisted. The opening cut, "Jalla Jalla," was inspired by a jaunt to Egypt; "Polka International De Louisiane" has a Cajun feel (at least sort of, adding in swirls of brass to the equation), while "Kind Of Polka" is a polka stood on its head. They do bring in vocals on a couple of tracks, the poppy, drinking song "Viinalaulaula" (which has a definite country tinge) and the stirring closer "Lars Lenkelifot." They've staked out their territory well, a little West of countrymen JPP, younger and fiestier but just as playful, and coming from the same area of Finland. Much of the material comes from their own pens - only "Lars Lenkilifot" comes from a tradition and that's Norweigan - but its roots remain quite overt. There's acres of melody here, and a grand sound of fiddles, a band that knows not only where it comes from but has a strong sense of direction about where it's going.---- CN 03/15/09
