Dirty Linen, CD Review >>

Popular music produced in rural areas often emerges as a pidgin hybrid of what can be heard on the radio, what instruments are available locally, and the imprint of the region's folk traditions. Juaneco y su Combo is a perfect example of this cross pollination, with surf guitar, a spacy Farfisa organ sound, and regional percussion taking the traditional music of Amazonian Peru into hitherto uncharted territory. One of Peru's most popular dance bands of the late 60s and 70s, Juaneco y su Combo was spear-headed by keyboard player Juan Wong Poplizio and guitarist Noe Fanchin, who also wrote most of the group's material.

Master's of Chicha I collects most of the group's hits from its commercial peak (1969 until 1977, when Fanchin and several other band members were killed in a plane crash). Fanchin's trebly lead guitar recalls California groups like the Ventures, with touches of West African highlife, whereas Popolizio's minor key organ recalls Nuggets-era groups like the Strawberry Alarm Clock. The group's material is all danceably uptempo, with multiple percussionists playing traditional and contemporary instruments. This disc, the first of several documenting Peruvian Chicha music of that era, brings a vital chapter in Peruvian music out of obscurity.
