Bloomington, Indiana, should not spring to mind when you think about music from around the globe, but Rock, Paper, Scissors (rockpaperscissors.biz) has served as a clearinghouse for music from the far corners. A lot of what they deal in simply defies easy categorization and “World Music” always seemed like a lame genre title anyway.

Teslim’s new CD finds leaders Kaila Flexer and Gari Hegedus armed with a boatload of antique, repaired and ethnic instruments. The hybrid of Greek, Turkish, Arabic, Jewish and Balkan music relies less on strict traditional songs than exploring where the music leads them. They fearlessly modify instruments, adapt traditional melodies and see what happens. The Maqam way of playing music relies on the Turkish perspective of notes falling between our Western scales, allowing Teslim a wider range of subtle expression.
