Bloomington, Indiana, should not spring to mind when you think about music from around the globe, but Rock, Paper, Scissors (rockpaperscissors.biz) has served as a clearinghouse for music from the far corners. A lot of what they deal in simply defies easy categorization and “World Music” always seemed like a lame genre title anyway.
Melvin Gibbs’ Elevate Entity dives into future funk with Ancients Speak. Jamaican, Haitian and Cuban filed recordings echo deep within the modern beats and programming. Bassist Gibbs takes his NYC-based gumbo and splays it toward transcendence. Guitarists Pete Cosey (Miles Davis) and Blackbyrd McKnight (Parliament-Funkadelic) add to the group’s firepower. Ancients Speak is fusion in the best sense of the word – Gibbs and crew know no barriers. 01/02/09
