Such is the transformative vocal prowess of singer Mariza that on her latest album, "Terra," she turns the sunny Charlie Chaplin anthem "Smile" into a melancholic weeper worthy of fado, the musical style for which she is best known.

"Fado was born in Lisboa (Lisbon), by the sailors, by the sea," says Mariza, who was born in Mozambique and reared in Portugal. "It's a music that explores the feelings of the human being — the feelings everybody has."

Though she is considered the face of fado, Mariza was tinkering with the form from the beginning of her career, bringing in elements of jazz, blues and various kinds of world music.

That spirit of musical experimentation continues on "Terra."

"You still have the roots; you still have the base," she says. "But I invite some friends, people who I would like to work with to help me get into this new level of sounds on the new record."

Mariza is famous at home but mostly unknown in the United States.

Yet she's neither intimidated by the size of this country nor the language barrier her music faces.

"I don't have anything to prove to anyone," she says.

"If people want to listen, they listen. If they don't, it's their choice. I'm here for the music. My life is music. I breathe music. My skin is music. Everything inside is music. Of course, one day, I will hope to have a little bit more than that. But music is my first love. It will always be the most important thing in my life."
