Tango and bolero are at the heart of Argentinian singer-songwriter Federico Aubele's music, but it also draws from numerous other dimensions, including refined electronica, Beatlesque pop, bossa nova, and reggae. The last sinuously lurches beneath the sultrily entwined vocals of Aubele and his wife, Natalia Clavier, on "Luna y Sol," the opening track of Aubele's new Amatoria (Eighteenth Street Lounge). The mood throughout Amatoria is sly, entrancing intimacy, exquisitely worked nuance oozing from both Aubele's rich, folk-based guitar figures and languorous vocals that flirt with romance. DePedro is the alter ego of singer and guitarist Jairo Zavala, a native of Spain who of late has been a member of the Calexico collective. His eponymous solo debut (Nat Geo) is an accomplished amalgam of pan-Latin influences ranging from Spanish folk to folkloric elements from throughout the Americas fused with pop, rock, and R&B. Other Calexicos are onboard to help out, and songs like "Te Sigo Soñando" have that band's dusty southwest feel, while others such as "Comanche" sport bristling horns, and "¿Qué Puedo Hacer Por Ti?" is a funky blues-pop confection. 18+.
