Step on out to the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., tomorrow night for an explosive evening of Nigerian juju music The King of Juju Music, the Minister of Enjoyment, King Sunny Ade.

The story is told that Sunny dropped out of school and traveled to Lagos to absorb the highlife sounds of the legendary I.K. Dairo and back home to follow in the footsteps of early juju pioneer Tunde Nightingale. In 1966 King Sunny changed the name of his 20-30 member band from the Green Spots to the African Beats. The music consists of long jams featuring talking drums and percussion, plenty of harmony singing, guitar, pedal steel and accordion.
