Who among us cannot relate to alcohol? I remember hitchhiking through Split (where this album was recorded) in the late 1960s and when I needed a place to sleep I would approach some farm house and indicate by signs I would like to kip on the floor of their barn. Invariably I was offered a glass of slivovica as a nightcap. Goran the tipsy gypsy leads a tight-nip band of brass players. I guess he wont be offended if I call it gypsy brass: he is a Yugoslav from Sarajevo, the Wrasse website calls it "Balkan polyphony." His Weddings & Funerals band has appeared on the BORAT soundtrack & he composed the soundtrack for "Time of the Gypsies" among other films. He has sold 3 million records (it says) so I add my little voice to the acclaim. This is a great album! There are six horn players, a busy drummer, and Goran himself on inaudible electric guitar, plus two women singers who spell him while he refills his glass. Bregovic explains his Serbian mother left his Croatian father because he drank too much. His father gave up drinking for 15 years until the mother died of leukemia. Then the father returned to his home village and planted a vineyard. Every year he drank the 1000 litres those grapes yielded, alone. Alkohol, this album, a tribute to his parents, was recorded live at Guca which adds to the excitement. The horns coast along on the fierce martial rhythms. Occasionally they take a break for a moment. They also play a tango which is exhilarating. Strong stuff, take it straight.  06/01/09 >> go there
