If, like me, you're asking yourself, How come I never heard of this guy before? this disc provides the background. After abandoning classical violin and taking up guitar because it was more likely to attract girls, Bregovic was a teen heartthrob in Eastern Europe in the 80s with his rock band, the White Button. After 14 years he abandoned rock when Emir Kusturica asked him to compose music for "Time of the Gypsies" and then "Arizona Dream," where he got to collaborate with Iggy Pop. In the 1990s he scored "Reine Margot" and worked with late lamented Israeli singer Ofra Haza. He collaborated with Cesaria Evora for Kusturica's "Underground," which garnered la Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1995. At this point Bregovic realized he missed performing live and put together the Weddings and Funerals Orchestra. He continued collaborating and wrote an oratorio about monotheistic religion, and a gypsy opera titled "Carmen, with a Happy Ending"! To prepare the American audience for his imminent arrival, Wrasse Records has put together a sampler of his gems and polished highlights from his repertoire. It's an action-packed trailer. Well, there are some mellow spells of relief, like the moody "Underground Tango," and other cinematic moments. After a respite we get the plum brandy infusion to get us pogoing for the second half of the disc. He does a great gypsy disco version of Lee Dorsey's "Ya ya"! A fine compilation and nice intro to Alkohol.  06/01/09 >> go there
